A doctor led practice
in Glenroy

Glenroy is a suburb of roughly 24,000 people in the City of Merri-bek, 12 kilometres north of the Melbourne CBD. It has historically been underserved for medical cosmetic care.

Patients from Melbourne’s north have typically travelled to the inner east or south east for doctor led cosmetic assessment. This practice exists to change that.

It is not a beauty clinic that has a doctor attached. It is a medical practice that happens to work in cosmetic medicine, and the difference shows up in how a consultation is conducted, what gets discussed, and what happens when the honest answer is that a procedure is not appropriate.

02  /  Practitioner Types

What a cosmetic doctor is,
and how that differs

This is the most useful thing on this page and almost no clinic website explains it. These are different qualifications with different scopes.

Cosmetic doctor

Holds a medical degree, registered with Ahpra as a medical practitioner. Can assess, diagnose, prescribe and perform procedures. Because they are a doctor, they can also recognise when a concern is medical rather than cosmetic and refer appropriately.

Cosmetic nurse

A registered nurse working in cosmetic practice. Can administer prescription cosmetic medicines, but since 2 September 2025 must hold a minimum of 12 months general clinical experience plus cosmetic-specific training, and works within a prescribing framework rather than prescribing independently.

Nurse practitioner

Holds an advanced practice qualification beyond registered nurse, with independent prescribing rights within their scope.

Dermatologist

A specialist medical practitioner who has completed specialist training in skin medicine. Dermatology is where medical skin disease belongs, including suspicious lesions, inflammatory conditions and skin cancer.

Plastic surgeon

A specialist surgeon. Surgery is not performed at this practice, and where a concern is genuinely surgical the appropriate answer is referral rather than a non-surgical substitute.

Beauty or dermal therapist

Not an Ahpra-registered health practitioner. Cannot legally administer prescription cosmetic medicines in Australia, regardless of what training certificate they hold.

The practical point: “who is treating me and what are they registered as” is a reasonable question to ask anywhere, including here.

03  /  The Law

Who is legally allowed to perform
cosmetic procedures in Australia

The substances used in cosmetic procedures are Schedule 4 prescription medicines. Only specific categories of Ahpra-registered health practitioner may administer them: medical practitioners, dentists, nurse practitioners, and registered nurses working within the September 2025 AHPRA requirements.

If the person offering to treat you is not Ahpra-registered, the procedure is illegal. Unregistered practice was a central finding of the New South Wales parliamentary inquiry into cosmetic health service complaints, and documented harms include serious adverse outcomes and a patient death.

Illegal procedures have been documented occurring in beauty clinics, residential homes, hotel rooms and, in reported cases, airport locations. If a procedure is offered anywhere other than licensed clinical premises, that is a warning sign about everything else involved.

04  /  Verify

How to verify any practitioner
before you book

Do this before booking anywhere, including here.

AHPRA.GOV.AU
Register of Practitioners

Public, free, takes under a minute. Enter a name or registration number for current registration status, the profession and division, any conditions, and any published disciplinary findings.

Dr Ibrahim Hawli, registration MED0002627622. Check it.

A practitioner who hesitates to provide their registration details, or who cannot, has answered the more important question. Verification should be encouraged by any practice confident in its position, and the fact that it usually is not is itself informative.

05  /  Assessment

What is assessed
at this practice

Assessment is organised by presenting concern rather than by procedure. Each page explains what typically causes it, the realistic options, what they cannot achieve, and when the concern is medical rather than cosmetic.

MEDICAL AND FUNCTIONAL

The full list is on the services page. Surgery is not performed at this practice.

06  /  The Model

Why assessment comes
before any recommendation

A consultation fee applies and is payable whether or not any procedure follows. That is not an administrative decision. It is the structural reason the assessment can be honest.

A practitioner paid only when a procedure books is under commercial pressure to recommend procedures. A practitioner paid for the assessment itself is not.

It means the recommendation can be a different procedure, a skincare approach rather than a procedure, referral to a dermatologist or GP, or that the concern is within normal variation and does not require treating. That last answer is given more often than a prospective patient might expect, and it is the reason the model works.

Read The Consultation Process for the four-step structure, and Consultation Fees for what the fee covers and why the free consultation model elsewhere is not actually free.

Informed consent requires that you actually understand the information given to you, not simply that it was provided. Consent obtained in a language a patient does not fully follow is not properly informed consent.

Interpreters are arranged at no cost to you, including Auslan. Tell us when you book. A week’s notice is ideal because interpreter availability is the limiting factor, but ask regardless of how much notice you have.

Using a family member to interpret is not appropriate for a consent discussion. The conversation covers risks, alternatives and specific clinical detail. See Informed Consent.
